Six Mile Cypress Slough : From their web site:

The Six Mile Cypress Slough (pronounced “slew”) is a 2,200 acre wetland in Fort Myers, Florida, that measures approximately 9 miles long and 1/3 mile wide. This linear ecosystem is home to a diverse population of plants and animals, including a few considered to be endangered. The Slough also serves as a corridor for wildlife by providing a safe route of travel.

The Slough is a natural drainage-way, collecting runoff water from a 33 square-mile watershed area during periods of heavy or prolonged rainfall. During the wet season (June through October), a depth of 2 to 3 feet of water makes the Slough comparable to a wide, shallow stream. This fresh water flows southwest through the Slough and empties into the Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve

STA 5 (Stormwater Treatment Area #5) : Stormwater Treatment Area #5 is south of Clewiston, Florida, near lake O. Surrounded by sugar fields, it is a huge area of rectangular ponds, perfect for wading birds, alligators, and a variety of other wildlife. Periodically they open it to birding and photography.

Harns Marsh : Harns Marsh is a hidden gem someone recently shared with me. It is located in eastern Lee County, is part of the county water control efforts, and is a large marsh with a berm running around the perimeter which allows you to walk. On the first quarter mile or so you are facing west to the water, so it is a great site in the first light of dawn.

Eagles - Cape Coral - George II and Gracie Mate : Cape Coral and the surrounding area hosts numerous eagles. Cape Coral's longest matron is Gracie, in the central cape where she lives in a large pine tree surrounded by signs warning away people on pain of lay (the cape bans anyone from coming within 150'). I stopped by at sunset one night and was lucky enough to catch them at an intimate moment (emphasis on "moment", notice the times below).

The images are not very good - distance, low light and a too-short lens. But the moment was unique enough I thought I would post for those interested in our eagles.

Naples Zoo : In relatively dense Naples I was surprised to find an interesting, but relatively low key zoo. The primate cruise was particularly interesting.

Butterfly World : Near Coral Springs Florida, this was a fascinating place with both aviary and butterfly (what do you call a place you keep butterflies? A zoo?). You walked through outdoor areas with the animals mixed in with the people, in a couple you could feed the birds, in others they flew around near you separated only by mutual consent.

Butterfly Estates : Butterfly Estates was recently opened in Ft. Myers. They are a small operation, but nicely done and with a very helpful staff. They have a relatively limited number of species but appear to be busily raising more. It is an indoor facility, so it is a great place if you are in SW Florida on a day with bad weather. These are shots taken there.
